The speaker of parliament Anita Annet Among on Thursday chaired a meeting of Parliament’s Appointments Committee of Parliament to vet Samuel Akena, who was recently  appointed Deputy Commissioner General of the Uganda Prisons Service.

In a message shared on social media, the Speaker said the committee conducted the vetting as part of the parliamentary approval process required for senior government appointments.

“This morning, I chaired the Appointments Committee of Parliament to vet Mr Samuel Akena, who was appointed Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons,” Among said.

She added that the committee will now prepare its report on the vetting exercise before forwarding it to the appointing authority in accordance with parliamentary procedures.

“The Committee’s report will be compiled and subsequently forwarded to the appointing authority as dictated by the rules,” she said.

Under Uganda’s parliamentary procedures, the Appointments Committee reviews presidential nominees for key public offices before making recommendations on whether they should be approved.

Akena will serve as Deputy Commissioner General in the Uganda Prisons Service, supporting the leadership responsible for overseeing the country’s correctional facilities and prison administration.
