Lwengo: NPP Chairperson Endorses NRM’s Mbabaali in Bukoto South Race

In a surprising political turn, Elias Ssegujja, the Chairperson of the National Peasants Party (NPP), has publicly endorsed NRM’s Bukoto South parliamentary flagbearer, Hajji Muyanja Mbabaali, ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Despite his party being part of the opposition bloc, Ssegujja described Mbabaali as a “dependable leader” with a strong connection to President Yoweri Museveni, which he believes uniquely positions him to drive development in Lwengo District.

“There is nothing wrong with working alongside the NRM if it means better service delivery for our people,” said Ssegujja while addressing residents during a campaign stop.

The NPP chairperson has been accompanying Mbabaali on a series of grassroots engagements across Lwengo, rallying support and expressing gratitude to voters for their past loyalty.

Ssegujja's endorsement comes at a time when the NPP is still recovering from internal divisions triggered by the resignation of former party president Stecia Mayanja, who stirred controversy after performing at a presidential rally in Kololo.

“Politics should not create unnecessary enmity. Let us focus on leaders who can deliver,” Ssegujja added, urging residents to support both Mbabaali and President Museveni.

Addressing his supporters, Hajji Muyanja Mbabaali emphasized the importance of unity among Baganda, and lauded President Museveni for his contribution to land rights and rural development.

During the campaign trail, residents from several villages in Lwengo took the opportunity to raise concerns over persistent power outages, which they say are hampering local development and small-scale businesses.

They called on the government to urgently intervene and ensure stable electricity supply to support livelihoods in the district.
