Dr Asiimwe Enters Race for Uganda Medical Association Presidency
Dr Frank Asiimwe, Uganda’s first kidney transplant surgeon, has announced his bid for the presidency of the Uganda Medical Association, promising to strengthen the association’s voice in advocating for doctors and the healthcare system.

The contest for the presidency of the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has intensified with the entry of Dr. Frank Asiimwe, Uganda’s pioneering kidney transplant surgeon, who aims to reposition the association as a stronger advocate for the medical profession.

Dr. Asiimwe, a consultant urologist at Mulago National Referral Hospital and lecturer at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, made history in 2023 when he led Uganda’s first successful kidney transplant—a landmark achievement that earned him national recognition as a trailblazer in the country’s healthcare sector.

He now hopes to bring the same level of commitment and innovation to UMA’s leadership.

“The medical profession is at a crossroads. UMA must be a firm advocate not just for the welfare of doctors but for the integrity of healthcare delivery in Uganda,” Dr. Asiimwe said.

Founded in 1964, UMA unites Ugandan medical doctors and serves as a professional body that promotes their welfare, training, and participation in shaping health policy.

Over the years, it has played a pivotal role in advocating for salary harmonization, improved working conditions, and the overall professional development of doctors.

Dr Asiimwe believes UMA must take a proactive stance as Uganda’s healthcare system faces mounting pressures.

“If doctors do not speak boldly, others will speak for us. We must defend our space as medical professionals and safeguard the future of medicine in Uganda,” he said.

With his entry, the race for UMA’s top position promises to be closely watched by both medical professionals and stakeholders across the country’s health sector.
