UPDF Troops Under UNGU-XI Urged on Vigilance in Somalia

Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU-XI) have been cautioned against complacency as they enter the second half of their tour of duty in Somalia.

The warning came from UNGU-XI Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, during a meeting with officers and men at the unit’s headquarters.

“We have made significant progress so far, but we cannot afford to relax,” he said.

“Our enemy of peace, Al-Shabaab, is constantly observing our activities and waiting for an opportunity to strike. We must remain alert and proactive to prevent any surprises.”

Lt Col Barigye urged leaders to set the tone for discipline and commitment.

“As leaders, it is our duty to ensure soldiers understand the importance of their role in peacekeeping and the risks involved. We must lead by example and maintain the highest standards.”

Military Intelligence Officer Captain Joseph Maada emphasised the critical role of timely intelligence in anticipating and countering enemy threats.

The meeting brought together company commanders, departmental heads, and shift leaders to reinforce operational readiness and vigilance.
