As the festive season and tourism peak period approaches, the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, Martin Bahinduka Mugarra, has spotlighted Banda Island as a premier destination for Ugandans and international visitors seeking a tranquil yet adventurous getaway.
Highlighting Uganda’s hidden treasures, Mugarra described Banda Island, part of the renowned Ssese Islands in Kalangala District, as “one of the most serene and rustic destinations for a relaxing, invigorating escape on Lake Victoria.”
Known for its crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, pristine rainforests, and captivating sunsets, Banda Island offers a unique blend of tranquility and adventure.
Popularized in the 1990s by Kenyan-British adventurer Dominic Symes, also known as “King Dom of Banda,” the island boasts a rich history reflected in its unique stone house structures and lush surroundings.
The Minister emphasized the variety of experiences awaiting visitors.
“Tourists can simply bask in the tranquility of the beach while resting on a hammock, or they can opt for more adventurous activities like hiking, kayaking, volleyball, fishing, or jet skiing,” he noted.
As day turns to night, Banda Island transforms into a social haven.
Visitors can gather around campfires with freshly smoked fish, enjoy refreshing drinks, and engage in lively conversations under the stars—an ideal way to end an adventurous day.
Encouraging both local and international tourists to explore the destination, Mugarra declared, “The holidays are here, let’s explore Uganda and discover gems like Banda Island. It’s an experience worth setting sail for.”
With its rustic charm and a wide range of activities, Banda Island is poised to attract more visitors eager to immerse themselves in Uganda’s natural beauty.
This endorsement reflects the government’s commitment to promoting domestic tourism and unveiling the country’s lesser-known treasures.
