President Museveni has scoffed at a section of Ugandans who sit at the sidelines waiting for government programs to propel them out of poverty.
Museveni argued that the art of escaping poverty solely relies on independent efforts and government only supports.
The President was speaking at the thanksgiving ceremony of Tourism Minister Goeffrey Kiwanda Suubi in Mityana where he also launched the "Kisoboka" agriculture initiative.
The initiative, the brainchild of Hon Kiwanda and Hon Judith Nabakooba, seeks to change the mindsets of farmers in Mityana to shift from subsistence to commercial agriculture and increase their household incomes.
“I thank Hon Kiwanda for this initiative and demonstrating to you that wealth creation through agriculture is possible. I congratulate him for putting the NRM wealth creation gospel into action,” he said.
“People should not claim they are waiting for government programmes in order to develop themselves. A pig or goat will not resist to be taken to the market for sale or slaughter just because the road is not tarmacked,” he added.
Museveni also used the opportunity to emphasise his gospel of the four acre farming policy claiming it brings high returns in Agriculture.
“You also need to ask yourself which crops you can grow with high returns. That is why I emphasize the four-acre model that includes planting coffee, fruits, food, grass for cattle and rear chicken in the backyard.”
The president warned residents against land fragmentation saying it breeds poverty. He instead encouraged families to own shares and split proceeds from produce according to shareholding.
He concluded by requesting to be the patron of the Kisoboka SACCO and pledging a Shs50m contribution towards its productive activities.
