Rukiga Muslim leaders decry lack of Islamic-founded schools

The  Muslim community in Rukiga district has expressed concern over what they termed as the  lack of  Islamic founded schools in the area.

Speaking during a fundraising function for Rukiga Muslim Nursery and Primary School, the  chairman for  Kabale district Muslim council  Hajji Issa Tindyebwa said  Rukiga district has over 101 schools and out of these the Islamic faith has only one .

“As Kabale district council we discovered that we have got very few Islamic founded schools in Rukiga district. This is a big worry for us since children dont have access to Islamic education at   nursery and primary levels,"  Tindyebwa said.

He however said as stakeholders, they are going to work on rectifying the problem.

Dr.Syliva Arinatwe, the  deputy managing director National Water and Sewerage cooperation and Patrick Kiconco Katabazi a senior lawyer hailed the function as one that united people of all walks.

Jafari Basajjabalaba, the  chairman LC5 Bushenyi district who was also the guest of honour at the fundraising ceremony called on the people of Rukiga not to be religious centered but rather unite and focus on service delivery.

“I call upon religions to unite in educating the children because there is no way anyone will benefit on the national cake or government funding without education," he said.

Rukiga Muslim nursery and primary school started in 2017 and has an enrollment of 473 pupils.

Over shs85million  was collected at the fundraising.
