Police in Mubende are investigating a theft incident in which unidentified suspects broke into a vehicle and stole Shs 100 million before abandoning part of the money during a pursuit in Kalonga Trading Centre, Kalonga Sub-county.
According to Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, the incident occurred on Thursday, May 22, 2026 at around 05:00pm when the suspects, travelling in a white Toyota Premio registration number UAP 811H, broke into a parked Toyota Rumion registration number UBR 308A.
The victim had briefly parked the vehicle and entered a nearby shop after withdrawing the cash from Centenary Bank Mubende Branch for transport back to Kalonga Trading Centre.
Upon returning, the victim discovered that a laptop bag containing the money had been stolen.
Police were immediately alerted and responded, using the victim’s vehicle to pursue the suspects towards Kitenga.
During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot.
One suspect escaped with the laptop bag, while another carried a white sack containing three different number plates believed to have been used interchangeably to evade detection.
The suspects dropped Shs 50 million and the sack with the number plates before escaping to an unknown location.
Police recovered the abandoned vehicle, Shs 50 million in cash, and the three number plates.
Statements from witnesses and the victim have been recorded, and investigations are ongoing to trace and arrest the suspects.
“The suspects broke into a parked vehicle and stole a laptop bag containing Shs 100 million. Following a swift police response and pursuit, part of the stolen money and other exhibits were recovered after the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot,” Kigozi said.
Police further urged the public to exercise caution when transporting large sums of money from banks.
“Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant after withdrawing large amounts of money from financial institutions, as criminals often disguise themselves as ordinary clients to identify and trail potential targets,” Kigozi added.
