Kwania Elderly Man Dies in Suspected Suicide Incident in Kwania District News

Residents of Kwania District are mourning the death of a 76-year-old man who died in a suspected act of suicide at his home in Opok-Kwele Village, Atongtidi Sub-county.

The deceased has been identified as William Ongeng. According to the area Local Council One (LC1) Chairperson, Jimmy Olwee, the incident occurred on February 24, 2026, at around 4:00 p.m.

Olwee said he and other residents were at a nearby trading centre when they heard a loud explosion, followed by thick smoke rising from Ongeng’s house.

Community members rushed to the scene but found the house already engulfed in flames.

“We attempted to intervene, but he had locked himself inside,” Olwee said, adding that despite efforts to put out the fire, Ongeng could not be rescued. His body was recovered after the flames were extinguished.

The incident was reported to police at Kwania Central Police Station. Officers visited the scene and transported the body for a postmortem examination as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death continue.

Preliminary information from local leaders indicates that Ongeng had recently been involved in a family dispute following the sale of a portion of family land.

Relatives had reportedly demanded a refund of the money from the transaction, a situation believed to have caused him emotional distress.

The LC3 Chairperson of Atongtidi Sub-county, Patrick Onyum Okwang, condemned suicide and urged residents to seek peaceful means of resolving conflicts.

“No problem is too big to be resolved through dialogue and community support. We encourage people facing difficulties to seek help from local leaders, elders, or religious leaders instead of harming themselves,” Okwang said.

He emphasized the need for stronger community support systems and greater attention to the mental and emotional well-being of vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly.

Local leaders have since called for increased community awareness on conflict resolution and improved access to psychosocial support services to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
