The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello, has received Copies of Credence from the Honorary Consul Designate of Grenada to Uganda, Samalie Nambooze, during a meeting held at the ministry headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday, reaffirming the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Uganda and Grenada.
Receiving the credentials, Oryem underscored Uganda’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations that promote trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchange, noting that such partnerships are central to Uganda’s foreign policy objectives.
“Uganda values partnerships that foster trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchange. The presentation of credentials by the Honorary Consul Designate of Grenada is a positive step in strengthening multilateral cooperation and expanding Uganda’s diplomatic footprint beyond its traditional regions,” he said.
Oryem further highlighted the strategic importance of Grenada in multilateral diplomacy, particularly within international fora such as the United Nations General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, and, at times, the United Nations Security Council.
“Grenada may appear small and distant on the map, but it is very important in international relations. When Uganda or Africa needs allies, countries like Grenada can offer meaningful support,” he added.
Oryem pledged the Ministry’s full support to the establishment and operations of the Grenadian consulate in Kampala and encouraged the Honorary Consul Designate to actively engage the diplomatic community to ensure the mission remains effective, visible, and impactful.
In her remarks, Nambooze expressed appreciation for the warm reception and said her appointment is aimed at revitalising diplomatic, trade, and tourism relations between Uganda and Grenada—ties that date back to the early 1990s, with formal diplomatic relations established in 1994.
“This appointment is about strengthening already existing relations between Grenada and Uganda. My role is to build stronger diplomatic, trade, and tourism linkages between the two countries,” she said.
Nambooze added that while the two nations have historically enjoyed cordial relations, the opening of a consulate in Kampala marks a shift toward practical, opportunity-driven cooperation, with a focus on unlocking mutual economic and cultural benefits.
