KAMPALA – The owner of a Mulago clinic, a gynecologist, and an orthopedic technologist have been remanded to Luzira prison after the death of Ritah Nansubuga, a 37-year-old mother, allegedly following a botched cesaerean section.

The trio appeared before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi and were formally charged with manslaughter and conspiracy to commit a felony. Nansubuga, a former nursing officer in Dubai, is survived by her one-day-old baby boy.

According to the prosecution, the suspects “negligently carried out a cesarean operation on 37-year-old Ritah Nansubuga in unsuitable premises and by unprofessional personnel, thereby causing her death.”

Nansubuga reportedly checked into Sun Set Consults clinic in Mulago for a routine antenatal visit but was allegedly persuaded to undergo the C-section at the facility.

The remanded suspects are Dr Henry Francis Kadaga, a gynecologist; Joel Kiwanuka, proprietor of Sun Set Consults clinic; and Hassan Budhugo, an orthopaedic technologist.

They were apprehended by the State House Health Monitoring Unit in conjunction with CID after Nansubuga’s relatives filed a formal complaint on September 9, 2025.

The suspects denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Kayizzi and were remanded until October 8, when they are expected to return to court to apply for bail.

A fourth individual, businessman Ahmed Lutaaya Kaleebu, who allegedly connected the deceased to the clinic, remains at large. Criminal summons have been issued for his arrest.
