It is structured to cushion victims and their families from the sudden financial burden that often follows road accidents.

Speaking at the launch in Kampala, Ruth Namuli, the Chief Executive Officer of Sanlam Allianz Uganda, said the company was committed to offering practical insurance solutions that fit into people’s everyday lives.

“We start with the values that we have in terms of innovation. It is critical for us to be able to give back to the community with products that are for our day-to-day lives, and this is what it’s all about,” Namuli said.

“Each day millions of Ugandans travel by road and most do so without any form of accident cover. The On-the-Go Accident Cover is simple, affordable, and accessible right from your smartphone.”

Namuli explained that the product was designed in response to Uganda’s growing road safety concerns.

“When you look at the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report for 2024, there were 25,000 reported road crashes, over 5,000 deaths, and over 17,000 injuries. Despite all this, most road users didn’t have any cover — some couldn’t even afford emergency care at Mulago,” she said.

She noted that the new product will help bridge this gap by providing coverage worth up to shs3.3 million for as little as shs 1,300 per trip.

“It’s less than the price of a Rolex, but it can cover you for accidents, permanent disability, funeral expenses, and medical attention,” Namuli added. “All you need is your smartphone. You can even cover your loved ones when they travel.”

She also called for collaboration with other sectors to make insurance part of the travel experience.

“We welcome partnerships with digital platforms, telecoms, and transport companies, especially buses and taxis, so that people are covered automatically as they pay for travel,” she said.

Namuli concluded by urging Ugandans to embrace the product.

“The app is live, the pricing is accessible, and the coverage is clear. Let’s live with confidence and make sure we are all covered.”

Representing the Civil Society Coalition on Transport (C-SPOT), Sam Stewart Mutabaazi commended Sanlam Allianz for innovating around one of Uganda’s most pressing public safety concerns.

“We bring together different actors in the transport industry to ensure we travel safely, whether by boda boda, bus, or taxi,” Mutabaazi said.

“This innovation is a solution to a situation that is escalating in the country.”

Mutabaazi praised the affordability of the product and the partnership between Sanlam and Allianz.

“You can pay as little as 5,000 shillings for your journey to Gulu or anywhere and be covered for death, disability, and medical expenses,” he said. “Sanlam is the largest insurance company in Africa, Allianz is the largest in the world. That combination brings strength and credibility to Uganda’s market.”

He urged the media to help raise awareness about insurance as a tool for social security.

“Insurance helps people sleep better when they know they are protected. The word itself is reassuring. Let’s insure ourselves and stay confident wherever we go,” he added.

C-SPOT, he said, looks forward to a long partnership with Sanlam Allianz to promote safer transport systems in Uganda.

Representing the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), Stephen Kadu Mukasa lauded Sanlam Allianz for its customer-centered innovation and adherence to regulatory standards.

“This launch demonstrates the company’s dedication to a broader goal we all share — providing financial security and promoting inclusiveness to enhance resilience among individuals and families,” Mukasa said.

He described the new product as a “practical protection solution” that addresses key risks faced by Ugandans every day.

“When a person is involved in an accident, they lose their ability to earn a living, and the consequences extend far beyond the individual. This product goes beyond financial protection; it restores dignity, stability, and hope,” he noted.

Mukasa assured the public that the On-the-Go Accident Cover had been thoroughly vetted and approved by the authority.

“You can have confidence in this product because it has undergone all due diligence to ensure it offers real value and complies with all regulatory standards,” he said.

He encouraged other players in the insurance industry to follow Sanlam Allianz’s example by developing solutions that address Uganda’s real social and economic challenges.

“We commend Sanlam Allianz for this bold step and pledge to continue supporting innovations that uphold integrity, enhance consumer confidence, and drive the growth of our insurance industry,” he concluded.

The On-the-Go Accident Cover is now available through a mobile app, allowing users to get insured in just a few clicks before travel.

Sanlam Allianz says the product represents a milestone in its mission to make insurance affordable, accessible, and practical for every Ugandan on the move.

The cover applies to any accident-related injury or death occurring within 24 months of the insured event, ensuring both short-term and extended protection.
