Staff of Wakiso District have extended a hand of compassion to vulnerable children with disabilities, donating essential supplies to the Gem Foundation as part of their Lenten charity outreach in Kamuli Village, Kakiri Sub-county, where the centre provides care for abandoned, neglected, and destitute children with severe disabilities.
The initiative, spearheaded by the St. Joseph the Worker Small Christian Community, where rice, millet, sugar, boxes of milk, baby porridge, sanitary pads etc were handed out
Speaking at the handover, Prossy Nakalembe, Head of Laity at the Small Christian Community, said:
"This initiative is meant to promote compassion and support for the needy during the Lenten season. We commend the Wakiso District staff for embracing almsgiving, which is a key pillar of Lent."
The outreach team was joined by Fr. Kasujja Francis of St. Jude Catholic Parish, who had earlier led Mass at the district headquarters. He lauded the foundation’s dedication to caring for vulnerable children and encouraged the community to continue supporting such efforts.
Mary Nakazibwe, Principal Community Development Officer for Wakiso District, highlighted the importance of the facility:
"Gem Foundation is one of the few centres in the district equipped to handle specialized cases, particularly for children with disabilities who have been abandoned or lack safe family environments."
According to Joan Nabasumba, the foundation’s lead social worker, Gem Foundation has been in operation for 12 years and currently accommodates 60 children—43 boys and 17 girls.
"Our aim is to ensure these children receive not just basic care, but also the love, guidance, and support they need to thrive," Nabasumba added.
The Lenten outreach by Wakiso District staff underscores the spirit of community solidarity and compassion, reflecting a commitment to the welfare of the most vulnerable in society.
