The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Henry Okello Oryem, held discussions with Ambassador Juan Humberto Macias Pino, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Cuba, at the Ministry headquarters in Kampala on Thursday.
The meeting centred on strengthening bilateral relations and exploring areas of mutual interest between the two nations.
During the engagement, Pino assured Oryem of Cuba’s confirmation to take part in the upcoming Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Mid-Term Review Summit scheduled to take place from 14th to 16th October 2025 at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The two exchanged views on matters expected to feature prominently during the forthcoming 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Oryem commended the longstanding solidarity of the Cuban government with Uganda and the African continent, recalling Cuba’s critical support during pivotal moments such as the struggles against apartheid and Namibia’s fight for independence.
He emphasised that such historic gestures cemented Cuba’s place as a partner committed to Africa’s liberation and progress.
“The government of Uganda remains deeply grateful for Cuba’s unwavering friendship and the sacrifices made in support of Africa’s freedom and prosperity. Our cooperation in education and health continues to touch lives and shape a better future for many Ugandans,” Oryem said.
Oryem further applauded the sustained bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the sectors of education and health.
He pointed out that despite the challenges posed by economic sanctions, Cuba has continued to offer scholarships and medical assistance, which he described as invaluable to Uganda’s development.
