The Joe Walker Foundation successfully conducted a 21km road safety walk to draw attention to the preventable deaths attributed to motorcycle accidents.
The foundation highlighted that Boda Boda accidents remain the biggest pipeline for road accident fatalities.
The event, which was open to the public, started at 8:00 a.m. from Sheraton Hotel and covered key areas including Nakawa, Ntinda, Kamwokya, Nankulabye, before returning to Sheraton Kampala.
Throughout the route, walkers and the foundation team engaged boda boda riders at their stages, sharing road safety messages and discussing the dangers faced by riders and passengers on Ugandan roads every day.
Boda Bodas continue to be the main form of transportation for the majority of Kampala residents and many more around the country.
Fast and dependable, boda bodas are also a source of employment for hundreds of thousands of mostly male Ugandans.
The Boda Boda Walk was led by Joseph Beyanga, aka Joe Walker, who is widely recognized for national campaigns on road safety involving long-distance endurance walks.
In 2023, he led the #TooYoungToDie walk from Kampala to Mbale, as well as the 2025 360km Kampala to Gulu (Northern Uganda) walk.
The road safety campaigns are in pursuit of the United Nations target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2030.
This weekend’s walk was made possible through the support of partners including Jubilee Allianz, Coca-Cola Beverages, Safe Boda, Sheraton Hotel Kampala, Nicole Foundation, Next Media Services, and Betika Uganda, whose contribution reflects their ongoing commitment to supporting safe, responsible communities through sports and mobility initiatives.
According to the latest statistics from the Uganda Police, nearly half of all road crashes involve motorcycles.
