Buganda Premier Stands Firm Against Pressure to Reopen Kasubi Tombs

The Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have been undergoing restoration since 2013 after a fire destroyed the main mausoleum in 2010.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has reiterated that the kingdom will not rush to reopen the Kasubi Tombs despite mounting pressure, insisting that critical renovations must first be completed.

Speaking during a visit to the historic site today, Mr Mayiga inspected ongoing works and was briefed on the remaining tasks, which include the reburial of four deceased Buganda kings, the construction of toilets, a parking lot, and the renovation of various structures within the tombs.

"We understand it has taken time, but we cannot bow to pressure until everything is set," Mayiga told the press after his tour.

"The unfinished work cannot be ignored, and we ask for patience."
