The National Union of Women with Disabilities in Uganda (NUWODU) has launched activities to mark the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence.
In a statement, the organisation said the campaign aims at ending violence against women and promotion of and protection of women’s rights. The Campaign runs annually from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights).
"The campaign will be used to increase awareness about the negative consequences of violence and to advocate for the prevention and elimination of violence. NUWODU in this launch calls on various stakeholders to take action in their communities, play their part and stand up against violence against women and girls with disabilities," the organisation said.
The event is scheduled for 2nd December, 2021 at the Esella Country Hotel starting at 08.00 a.m.
The overall objective of the campaign is to raise awareness about violence against women and girls with disabilities, including all forms of violence and its negative consequences on women and girls with disabilities.
At the end of the end of the campaign, it is expected that there will be increased awareness and mobilisation of stakeholders to take collective responsibility to fight against sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities; fresh commitment will be made to accelerate implementation of commitments to prevent and end violence against women with disabilities, including sexual violence in conflict.
