Student commits suicide after being insulted by teacher

Police at Katwe in Kampala city are probing a death of a student who reportedly committed suicide following an insult by a teacher at school.

Bright Namusoke, aged 20 years, a senior six student at Kitebi senior secondary school took her life on Wednesday, 6 at about 4pm in Ngobe Zone, Bunamwaya Division in Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality in Wakiso District.

In a statement by Kampala metropolitan police, it is said that one of the deceased's relatives told police that Namusoke came back from school and informed them that a teacher abused her and she was so angry.

“The relatives didn't take it seriously but later found her in one of the rooms in their house hanging on a rope,” reads part of the statement by KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.

Owoyesigire said that police responded to the distress call and retrieved the body from the scene and recovered relevant statements to help with the investigations.

Preliminary reports indicate that the relatives informed police that the deceased had a history of mental illness.

Police said that relatives informed detectives that the late has been suffering with illness but was receiving treatment for it.

The body was conveyed to city mortuary at Mulago for post mortem.
