Expectant mothers and newborn babies at Mpigi Health Centre IV are set to receive improved care following a donation of maternity equipment worth millions of shillings from Rotary.

The donation is aimed at addressing shortages of essential equipment that have affected maternal and newborn healthcare services at the facility, creating challenges for health workers and mothers seeking care.

The items handed over include delivery beds, newborn incubators, baby cots, premature baby care equipment, examination beds, delivery instruments and other medical supplies required during childbirth.

The equipment was received by Mpigi District leaders and health workers during a handover ceremony attended by representatives from the Rotary Club of Lungujja and the Rotary Club of Nabbingo.

Speaking during the handover, Rotary Club representative John Matovu said the intervention followed concerns raised by residents and health workers over inadequate maternity equipment at the health facility.

"We responded after learning about the challenges the health facility has been facing. Our goal is to strengthen maternal and newborn healthcare by providing equipment that will improve the quality of services offered to mothers and their babies," Matovu said.

Health workers at Mpigi Health Centre IV welcomed the support, saying the equipment would help them provide better services to mothers and newborns.

One of the health workers said the donation would address some of the obstacles that had affected effective service delivery.

"This support gives us the tools we need to perform our duties more effectively. We now have a greater responsibility to ensure mothers and newborns receive the quality care they deserve," the health worker said.

Rotary members urged the health facility management to ensure proper use and maintenance of the equipment so that it continues benefiting patients for years.

Saad Mwanje from Rotary said responsible management of the donated items would maximise their impact on maternal and child health services.

"We hope this equipment will be used for its intended purpose and maintained properly so that it continues serving mothers and newborns in the community," Mwanje said.

Mpigi District leaders, led by District Council Speaker Patrick Katende, commended Rotary for supporting the district's health sector and pledged to monitor the equipment to prevent misuse.

"We appreciate Rotary for responding to a critical need in our health facilities. As district leaders, we shall ensure the equipment is protected and put to proper use for the benefit of our people," Katende said.

Rotary officials said the donation forms part of broader efforts to improve healthcare services in underserved communities, adding that similar support would be extended to other health facilities across Uganda where shortages of essential medical equipment continue to affect service delivery.
