The United States government has stepped up its support to Uganda’s fight against the ongoing Sudan Ebola Virus (SUDV) outbreak, donating 100 vials of lifesaving monoclonal antibodies to the Ministry of Health.
This contribution marks a milestone in the country’s Ebola response efforts and reinforces the U.S.–Uganda partnership in global health security.
The donation, handed over by U.S. Ambassador William W. Popp to the Minister of State for Health (General Duties), Hon. Anifa Kawooya Bangirana, took place at the National Medical Stores in Entebbe.
The medicines will be safely stored and are viable for years under the required temperature conditions, ready for immediate deployment should new cases emerge.
Monoclonal antibodies represent a breakthrough in the treatment of Ebola, significantly improving survival rates by targeting and neutralising the virus in infected individuals.
Their inclusion in Uganda’s response marks a major advancement in preparedness and patient care.
“The United States’ donation of monoclonal antibodies is an important contribution to the global fight against Ebola, saving lives in Uganda, and making both America and Uganda safer,” said Ambassador Popp.
“This donation underscores our commitment to scientific innovation, public health, and shared global security.”
This latest support builds on the U.S. government’s track record of Ebola response in Uganda. During the 2022 outbreak in Mubende, similar antibody therapies were donated and used successfully under compassionate use protocols.
In 2025 alone, the U.S. has committed over $6 million to Uganda’s Ebola response efforts. This funding has supported vital areas such as case detection, contact tracing, laboratory diagnostics, border health surveillance, community education, and infection control.
As Uganda nears the countdown to declare the end of the current outbreak, the availability of these treatments adds a critical layer of preparedness to respond swiftly to any resurgence.
This donation is part of a broader U.S. strategy to strengthen Uganda's health system and its capacity to respond to not just Ebola, but a range of infectious diseases that threaten national and global health security.
For decades, the United States has been a key health partner to Uganda, supporting programs in HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, malaria, and emerging infectious diseases.
This latest intervention reflects a continued commitment to innovation, resilience, and saving lives both in Uganda and around the world.
