From Goalposts to Breaking News: The Story of Moses Agaba, the Journalist
Moses Agaba, once a celebrated goalkeeper in Kigezi, has transformed into one of the region’s most respected journalists, overcoming intimidation, size-based discrimination and professional hurdles to build a 15-year career rooted in passion, accuracy and service to his community.

In the hills of the Kigezi sub-region, few names spark as much curiosity as that of Moses Agaba, better known by his nickname “Seaman.”

Long before he became one of the region’s most recognisable journalists, Agaba was celebrated for his fearless goalkeeping.

His acrobatic saves and commanding presence at Mazimba and Kabale Secondary School made him a standout sports figure, the kind whose leaps across the goalposts stirred crowds into roaring admiration.

But as the years unfolded, so did his passions. Today, Agaba is no longer between the sticks; instead, he stands behind notebooks and camera lenses, a role he has embraced for the past 15 years.

He previously worked with Red Pepper and now reports for ChimpReports, where he has earned a reputation as one of Kigezi’s most reliable and consistent journalists.

His warm personality and sharp instincts have helped cement his place in the newsroom, where colleagues and audiences alike recognise him for his dedication to truth and accuracy.

Reflecting on his journey into journalism, Agaba said his passion began in childhood, when he regularly read newspapers and listened to radio news.

He was particularly inspired by Julius Mucunguzi, now the spokesperson of the Electoral Commission, who at the time worked with the Daily Monitor.

“I am usually faced with intimidation from some sources whenever I am in the field,” Agaba said. “Another challenge is size discrimination, especially when I am on duty reporting news.”

Observers note that Agaba’s size has occasionally led some people to underestimate him in the field, though it has never hindered his reporting.

Jovia Twinamatsiko, Agaba’s mother, said her first-born son grew up active and enthusiastic, with football as his favourite hobby and newspapers never far from his hands.

She explained that the nickname “Seaman” emerged from his passion for the game during his school years.

“My son had no childhood health complications, and during his childhood he used to love football and reading newspapers,” Twinamatsiko said.

Fellow journalists describe Agaba as one of the region’s best court reporters, known for his accuracy, calmness and commitment to factual storytelling.

They say he has become an inspiration for many aspiring reporters who hope to specialise in court coverage, a field that demands patience, precision and integrity.

From guarding goalposts to capturing headlines, Moses Agaba continues to serve his community in the way he knows best—by telling its stories, amplifying its voices and keeping the spirit of Kigezi alive.
