French embassy launches project to boost creative, cultural industries

Our general understanding of Africa's arts and creative industry is that it will not yield any tangible results. Well, that's any African parent's mentality.

However, the world has transitioned into a space where the number of creatives is constantly growing, thus the need to professionalise and monetise these talents.

The French Embassy in Uganda has heeded the call by officially announcing the launch of the SPICE project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to transform and enhance the Ugandan creative and cultural industries.

The SPICE project, which stands for "Structuring, Professionalizing, and Innovating Creative Enterprises," promotes the production of attractive content and is set to revolutionize the landscape for cultural entrepreneurs in the country.

In his address, Ambassador Xavier Sticker mentioned his desire to see the Ugandan creative space flourishing.

"I want Uganda to be more attractive in the creative industry. I see potential, talent, and skills, and Uganda will benefit even more, as will our investors," Sticker said.

The programme focuses on various fields such as music, animation, cinema, video games, cultural heritage, and augmented reality.

The partners of this programme are Richard Musinguzi Studio, Kiasi Productions, Alliance Francaise de Kampala, Keepers XR Experience, Pearl Rhythm Foundation, Arudem, and e-Sport.

One of the participating creatives, Pearl Rhythm Foundation, focuses on creating a virtual museum to amplify Uganda's indigenous minority.

According to Suzan Kerunen, their goal is to sell the beautiful parts of Uganda.

"As an artist, when I look at situations, with the aim of finding something beautiful to sell about Uganda, I will run to conserve cultural heritage communities," Kerunen said.

Another creative, Arudem, focuses on gaming, helping creatives achieve their potential in different talents.

Their founder, Ivan Kibuuka, believes that gaming is more than entertainment and can be used to earn a living.

This project will provide cultural entrepreneurs with the resources and training necessary to develop their skills and businesses.

Part of this initiative includes the Team France Creation Fund for Civil Society Organisations in the field of culture and creative industries grant program.

This grant program will see young people grow and sustain their businesses in terms of the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The selected few will be part of a cohort encompassing creatives in music, film, and storytelling, among other fields.

Cultural entrepreneurs participating in the SPICE project will have access to workshops, training sessions, and mentorship programs, gaining valuable insights and practical skills to help them navigate the competitive landscape of the creative industries.

The project will also facilitate networking opportunities, allowing entrepreneurs to connect with industry experts and potential collaborators.

One of the key objectives of the SPICE project is to promote innovation and African entrepreneurship, fostering a shared destiny between the youth of Europe and Africa.

By empowering young creatives and entrepreneurs, the project aims to create a vibrant ecosystem that supports the production of compelling and attractive content.

The launch of the SPICE project highlights the importance of international collaboration in achieving shared goals.

The partnership between the French Embassy and Ugandan cultural entrepreneurs exemplifies the potential for cross-continental cooperation in fostering cultural and economic growth.

By supporting the youth of both Europe and Africa, the SPICE project aims to build a future where creative industries thrive and contribute to mutual prosperity.

In the words of Xavier Sticker, "We need to build a common shared interest."

As the SPICE project takes off, the anticipation and excitement among Ugandan cultural entrepreneurs are palpable.

With the support of the French Embassy and the project's comprehensive approach to skill development and innovation, the future of Uganda's creative and cultural industries looks brighter than ever.

The SPICE project is poised to be a game-changer, unlocking new potentials and setting the stage for a thriving creative sector in Uganda.
