Museveni to host Cranes, Netball team in Rwakitura

President Museveni will host the Uganda Cranes, national Netball team and athletes at his country home in Rwakitura on January 2.

Lamex Omara Apitta, Commissioner for Physical Education in the Ministry of Education and Sports  said: " We were asked to send the names as the President wants to host the particular sports men and women to a luncheon."

The Cranes have had an excellent 2017 after taking part in the Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Gabon and also qualifying for the 2018 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) to take place in Morocco. The U-20 team (Hippos) also finished fourth at the 2017 COSAFA Championship in Zambia early this month.

The Netball team, She Cranes, were also in good form this year as they won the 2017 Africa Netball Championship and qualified for the 2018 Commonwealth Games to take place in Australia.

The Junior Netball team also competed in the World Cup.

Dominic Otuchet, president of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) also confirmed that they have already sent in the names of officials and athletes who will travel to Rwakitura.

"We are not aware what message the President wants to give us," added Otuchet.

Besides hosting the World Cross Country Championship where Uganda won one gold medal, Uganda's Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei also won a silver medal in 10,000m at the World Championships.

The Sportsmen and women will be eager to listen to what President Museveni will say about their continued delay of monthly stipends given out to all who win medals at big International events.
