In a landmark move toward professional integrity and technological advancement, Uganda officially launched its Electronic Registration and Licensing System during this year’s World Engineering Day celebrations.
The event, attended by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa and Minister for Works and Transport Hon. Katumba Wamala, emphasized the year’s theme: “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future Through Innovation and Digitisation.”
In a symbolic gesture, both officials were registered as honorary engineers, highlighting the system’s ease of use and modern interface.
The launch of the e-registration platform responds directly to the theme’s call for innovation to drive sustainability.
By digitizing licensing, the Engineers’ Registration Board (ERB) seeks to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles that previously slowed professional growth.
Beyond administrative efficiency, the system serves as a critical safeguard for the industry.
Ronald Namugera, Registrar of the Engineers’ Registration Board, stressed that the digital transition is essential to limit the prevalence of “shady engineers” who impersonate professionals and compromise the reputation of the fraternity.
“This technological leap is not merely about convenience; it is a vital step in safeguarding national infrastructure,” Mr Namugera said.
He added that unqualified individuals have been a key factor behind substandard roads and failing infrastructure across the country.
By ensuring that only those who have completed proper professional channels can hold the title of engineer and practice, the new system aligns digitization with the goal of a sustainable, high-quality built environment.
Through this launch, Uganda has translated the World Engineering Day theme into tangible action, securing the future of the nation’s infrastructure in the hands of verified and qualified experts.
