At the Taasa Obutonde – Zero Waste campaign launch held at Next Media Park on June 12, 2025, leaders from different sectors came together with one shared mission — to fix how Uganda manages its waste. The event, aired live on NBS TV and Afro Mobile, signaled a fresh commitment to making environmental responsibility a national priority.
James Bond Kunobere, the Deputy Director of Sanitation and Environment Management at KCCA, made it clear that change won’t happen in isolation. “We need more partnerships and active community involvement to truly shift behaviors around waste,” he said while addressing the panel.
Kunobere pointed out that most people don’t see waste as their problem, yet it affects us all. He noted the gaps in media coverage around waste issues and called for more creative, consistent storytelling that moves people to act. “We must link those producing waste with those who can manage it better — especially around organic waste,” he added.
This launch was part of the build-up to the Uganda Environment Forum 2025, and it introduced new tools, platforms, and ideas to rally Ugandans around the theme “My Waste, My Responsibility.”
The message was simple: Everyone has a role — from homes and businesses to schools and local leaders. KCCA’s involvement and honest reflection set the tone for a more connected, solutions-focused conversation on waste, and a clearer way forward.
