270 women have enrolled for a three months’ orientation in business under the Academy of Women Entrepreneurs funded by the American government.
Speaking at the event the US ambassador Deborah Malac intimated that this is meant to boost women led business as well as address gaps in the already existing businesses.
The academy was launched by the US Ambassador in Uganda Deborah Malac.
Deborah Malac explained that the goal of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs is to teach women around the world to become successful entrepreneurs.
She noted that women's empowerment would be key to Uganda's long-term economic development.
Fiona Luswata, head of training at the academy, reveals that a diverse group of 270 women were selected from a pool of over 1,000 applicants. They will receive lessons on business management, network with like-minded entrepreneurs and mentors, and learn the practical skills required to create successful and sustainable businesses.
Uganda is among 26 pilot countries worldwide selected to participate in the AWE programme. Other African countries participating in the inaugural AWE are: Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
