Angel Blessing Atuhaire Defies Kabale Cold for Education

By | April 20, 2026

Angel Blessing Atuhaire, a Primary Seven pupil at Kengoma Primary School in Kabale District, has shown remarkable determination by waking up very early every day to attend school, even in harsh cold conditions.

Her commitment highlights the importance of education for the girl child, as she prepares for the 2026 Primary Leaving Examinations.

In the early morning hours, our reporter arrived at her home in Nyabikoni Ward, Northern Division of Kabale Municipality, where the 14-year-old was already dressed in her school uniform, preparing for her journey.

Atuhaire was getting her bicycle ready for a daily ride of about 10 kilometres to school.

The reporter followed her for part of the journey, observing how she navigates the cold morning air before arriving at school, parking her bicycle, and heading straight to class.

In an interview, Atuhaire explained the challenges she faces, including waking up very early and the fear of insecurity along the way.

She also said the long rides often leave her with pain in her thighs due to the physical strain.

She added that she travels such a long distance due to school fees challenges, calling for support to help her stay in school. Atuhaire also encouraged girls who have dropped out of school to return and continue their education.

Her father, Moses Fitumukiza, said the family lives near several schools but opted for a government-aided institution due to financial constraints.

“I didn’t go to school, so I am working hard to ensure that my children attain education,” he said.

At Kengoma Primary School, teachers describe Atuhaire as a focused and disciplined pupil.

Her Social Studies teacher, Willing Katurebe, said she is punctual despite the long distance and is active in class activities such as debating and leading prayers during assembly.

“Sometimes Atuhaire encounters accidents during her journey to school as well as being hit by morning rains,” Katurebe noted.

Despite the challenges, Atuhaire’s daily journey reflects resilience, determination, and a strong desire to succeed.

Her story continues to inspire fellow learners, especially young girls facing similar barriers to education.
