A video circulating on several social media platforms, claiming to show a recent crash along the Northern Bypass, is misleading and outdated.
A reverse image search conducted on the clip reveals that it is from December 2023, not a recent incident. The video, which shows a fatal accident involving multiple vehicles and motorcycles, originally depicted an event at the Northern Bypass-Namboole roundabout.
In response to the viral video, the Traffic Police Department has issued a public clarification. Mr. Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police spokesperson, confirmed that the incident shown in the video occurred last year, not recently, and involved a collision of 14 vehicles and two motorcycles.
Kananura further emphasised that the accident was widely reported in the media, including on social platforms, at the time it occurred.
He expressed concern about the video being recirculated as though it were a new event, warning that this could create unnecessary panic and confusion among the public.
“We are concerned that the re-circulation of this outdated video as a new incident can have negative consequences on our society,” Kananura stated in the police’s public advisory.
The Traffic Police spokesperson urged the public to be cautious when sharing online content, stressing the importance of verifying information before sharing it.
“Verify before you share,” Kananura advised, reminding everyone of their responsibility in preventing the spread of misinformation, particularly on digital platforms.
