The suspects were arrested during a security operation led by Deputy Resident District Commissioner Rosemary Atuhaire with the support of traders, boda boda riders and other security personnel.
According to security officials, the suspects allegedly trailed Mukiga from the bank before attempting to break into his vehicle. They were intercepted before they could carry out the alleged theft.
Authorities recovered laptops, duplicate number plates and other suspected devices believed to have been used in vehicle break-ins.
Deputy RDC Rosemary Atuhaire said security had received increasing complaints from traders who claimed they were being followed after withdrawing money from banks.
"There have been complaints from traders over increased insecurity and allegations of thugs who wait at banks and follow customers after they withdraw money before stealing from them," she said.
"Together with traders we arrested those who attempted to steal from Mukiga. We recovered laptops and duplicate number plates from their vehicle. I commend traders and boda boda riders for cooperating with security during this crackdown," Atuhaire added.
While the deputy RDC indicated five suspects had been arrested, the Nile Post could only count four at the station.
She urged members of the public to remain vigilant, adding that the suspects reportedly told investigators they were from Mpigi District and often used vehicles and boda bodas while concealing their identities with helmets.
"This is a very big group. We have arrested five suspects, all said to be from Mpigi. We are ready to fight such criminal acts and ensure they are handled according to the law," she said.
Mukiga said he had noticed the suspects following him on several occasions and had alerted security before returning to the bank.
"These thieves started following me yesterday after I withdrew money from Centenary Bank. Today I went to Stanbic and later Centenary, and they followed me again. I had already alerted security, and as they attempted to open my car they were captured. This is the sixth time they have followed me. We ask the security team to help us arrest such people," Mukiga said.
Another trader, Charles Muhereza, said he lost Shs20 million under similar circumstances earlier this month.
"On July 1, I withdrew Shs20 million from the bank and placed it in an envelope in my car. On my way home, I passed by All Saints Church. While there, I noticed a vehicle following me. They later stole my money. They have devices for opening cars," Muhereza said.
District authorities said the suspects will be processed in accordance with the law as investigations continue to establish whether they are linked to other similar incidents.
By press time, police had not yet issued an official statement on the arrests or the ongoing investigations.
