Police in Kiboga District have launched investigations into a suspected illegal abortion case after a female fetus was recovered from a pit latrine in Kajjere Village, Kibiga Sub-county.
The incident came to light after residents discovered the fetus in a pit latrine belonging to Ibrahim Wasswa, prompting police to intervene and begin inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, investigations led to the arrest of 17-year-old Sarah Nampijja, who was previously known in the community to have been pregnant. Suspicion arose after residents noticed that she was no longer visibly pregnant and reported the matter to authorities.
Police said Nampijja allegedly admitted to terminating the pregnancy with assistance from her mother, Jesca Nakibuule, her sister, Justine Nalugo, and a medical worker from Kajjere Village who allegedly supplied drugs believed to have induced the abortion.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was given medication on two separate occasions on June 15, 2026, during the day and later at night, with the intention of inducing premature termination of the pregnancy,” SSP Kigozi said.
Police reports indicate that at around 2:00am on June 16, Nampijja allegedly delivered the fetus, which was later dumped in the pit latrine.
Following a report from residents, police officers visited the scene, documented evidence, and retrieved the fetus for examination as investigations continued.
Police are also investigating allegations by some community members that Nampijja’s mother, Jesca Nakibuule, had previously been in a relationship with a man identified as Brian Bakuza, who later allegedly became involved with Nampijja, resulting in the pregnancy.
Residents claim the development caused tension within the family, with some alleging that Nakibuule had opposed the pregnancy. However, police said these claims remain part of ongoing investigations and have not yet been independently verified.
“We are pursuing all persons mentioned in the ongoing investigations. Anyone found to have participated in the commission of the offence will be held accountable under the law,” SSP Kigozi said.
Police said Nampijja’s mother, sister, and the medical worker who allegedly provided the drugs are currently on the run, with efforts underway to trace and arrest them.
Authorities have warned the public against engaging in illegal abortion and infanticide, noting that such acts carry serious health risks and legal consequences.
“Abortion and infanticide are serious offences. We urge members of the public to seek lawful medical guidance and support whenever faced with pregnancy-related challenges instead of resorting to dangerous and illegal practices,” SSP Kigozi said.
Investigations are ongoing as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify all individuals who may have been involved.
