Police in Arua City have launched a manhunt for a group of residents who beat a young boda boda rider to death over suspected theft, as authorities condemn rising cases of mob justice and warn against taking the law into one’s own hands.

Police in Arua City are investigating a case of murder by mob action following the killing of a 20-year-old boda boda rider in Central Division.

The deceased has been identified as Iddi Anguandia Ogosi, a resident of Abia Cell, Pangisa Ward.

The incident occurred on April 29, 2026, at around 8:00am in Old Bus Park Cell, Bazaar Ward. Police say the matter was reported by an unknown caller at about 8:20am.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police Josephine Angucia, the Police Public Relations Officer for the West Nile region, officers responded swiftly to the scene but found the victim had already been beaten to death by an angry mob.

“We received information that a man was being assaulted by a mob at Old Bus Park. Our officers responded immediately, but unfortunately found that the victim had already been lynched,” Angucia said.

Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased was suspected of snatching a bag from an unidentified woman before attempting to flee.

“Witnesses told police that the suspect allegedly grabbed a bag containing phones and other items and tried to escape, but was intercepted and beaten by members of the public,” she explained.

Police visited and documented the scene before transporting the body to Arua Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Statements from witnesses have since been recorded to aid ongoing investigations.

No arrests had been made by press time, but police say intelligence teams are actively pursuing those involved in the killing.

The case has been registered under Arua City CBD CRB 287/2026.

SSP Angucia strongly condemned mob justice, describing it as unlawful and unacceptable in modern society.

“We continue to condemn acts of mob justice. It is illegal and barbaric. Suspects should always be handed over to police to ensure justice is served through the law,” she emphasized.

She also urged young people to pursue lawful means of earning a living.

“We encourage the youth to engage in productive and income-generating activities instead of resorting to theft and crime,” Angucia added.

Police have appealed to members of the public to co-operate with investigations and report any individuals involved in the incident.
