Mob Kills Two Suspected Motorcycle Thieves in Arua City

Police have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which two men suspected to be involved in motorcycle theft were killed by a mob in Ayivu East Division, Arua City, in the early hours of Monday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 12:20 a.m. at Buniababa Trading Centre in Odravu Ward.

The deceased have been identified as Godfrey Aliga, 31, a boda-boda rider and resident of Oluodri Cell, Ariwara Ward, and Vincent Mabe, 24, also a resident of the same area.

Preliminary findings indicate that the two men were intercepted by a group of residents who had organized themselves to provide night security due to rising cases of motorcycle theft in the area.

The duo was reportedly seen pushing a red Bajaj motorcycle without a number plate, raising suspicion among the locals.

Police say the two men attempted to flee upon noticing the advancing mob, abandoning the motorcycle behind. However, they were chased, captured, and brought back to the scene where they were beaten to death.

The West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, SSP Josephine Angucia, confirmed the incident and condemned the actions of the mob, emphasizing that such acts undermine justice.

“We strongly condemn mob justice in all its forms. Taking the law into your own hands not only denies suspects their right to a fair hearing but also interferes with ongoing investigations,” SSP Angucia said.

She noted that a case of murder by mob has since been registered at Oluko Police Post and later at Ayivu East Division under CRB 55/2026.

Police responded to the scene, documented evidence, and conveyed the bodies to Arua Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.

The suspected stolen motorcycle was also recovered and taken into police custody, while statements from witnesses have been recorded to aid investigations.

SSP Angucia further revealed that while there are allegations from community members linking the deceased to previous motorcycle thefts, such claims do not justify unlawful actions.

“Even if individuals are suspected of criminal activity, they must be handed over to the police for proper investigation and lawful action. Mob justice is a crime, and those involved will be held accountable,” she warned.

Police have vowed to pursue all individuals involved in the attack and ensure they are prosecuted.

Authorities continue to appeal to the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and refrain from acts of violence, stressing that justice can only be achieved through legal processes.
