A series of nocturnal attacks by an unknown animal, locally called “ekyoha,” has left dozens of goats, sheep, and pigs dead or injured across Ntungamo District, sparking fear among farmers and concerns over human safety.

Panic and uncertainty have gripped farmers in Ntungamo District following a string of night attacks by a mysterious animal locally known as “ekyoha.”

The raids have left dozens of domestic animals dead and many others injured, raising fears of escalating losses and potential threats to human safety.

The attacks began earlier this week in Kajara, where goats, sheep, and pigs were found dead—some partially eaten, others untouched, and several badly injured.

The animal is said to strike at night, moving from one home to another, killing multiple animals in a single raid, with some reported missing.

“We had over 18 sheep, but in the morning, only 8 survived,” said Osca Asingwire, a local farmer.

Farmers are reporting heavy losses, with more than a dozen animals reportedly killed in a single night.

The pattern of killing more animals than it consumes and leaving remains scattered has heightened fear, prompting residents to restrict movement after dark.

“This strange animal has been eating pigs and leaves behind the head. We are in fear that it might eat people. The government should help us. It has eaten our 15 pigs but it moves home to home,” added Bakwangira.

The latest incident was reported in Nyakyera, Ruhaama East yesterday, where several animals were killed in a similar attack. However, the Ntungamo District Veterinary Office says no official reports have yet been received.

Residents are calling on authorities to investigate the attacks and implement measures to protect livestock and prevent potential danger to humans.
