KCCA Takes Action After NBS Journalist Assaulted, Suspect Arrested
Kampala Capital City Authority says one suspect has been apprehended and disciplinary proceedings initiated against two officers following the assault of NBS Television journalist Siraje Kiberu while covering street vendor operations.

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has confirmed the arrest of one suspect and launched internal disciplinary proceedings after NBS Television journalist Siraje Kiberu was assaulted while documenting alleged irregularities by enforcement officers in downtown Kampala.

According to KCCA, the incident occurred on Wednesday near Namirembe Road, where vendors had reportedly returned to trade illegally despite ongoing efforts to clear road reserves and pavements.

KCCA, in cooperation with the Uganda Police, apprehended the suspect, identified as Kiviiri, who has been forwarded to the Chief Magistrates’ Court for further action.

“The police have requested a medical examination report to support ongoing investigations,” KCCA said, adding that disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against two officers who allegedly failed to prevent vendors from returning to the streets under their watch.

KCCA expressed solidarity with Kiberu and the broader media fraternity.

“We stand firmly with Siraje and the entire media fraternity. No journalist should ever face harm while carrying out their duty,” the authority said, emphasizing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and building a livable city for all.

The assault occurred as Kiberu was covering operations by KCCA to restore order in Kampala, following a directive to remove illegal street vendors.

While reporting near the busy Kikuubo business area, Kiberu observed enforcement officers allegedly allowing some vendors to continue operating.

As he began filming the scene, he was reportedly confronted and attacked by individuals dressed in KCCA uniforms, leaving him with visible injuries and a bruised face.

Colleagues, including Erich Mboowa, highlighted that Kiberu was surrounded and assaulted by three officers, who could only be identified as Kabiito, Ibra, and another person in plain clothes.

The incident drew widespread condemnation online, sparking calls for accountability from journalists, activists, and members of the public.

The incident comes amid ongoing debate over street vending in Kampala, a sensitive issue as the city authority works to enforce regulations while maintaining fair trade practices for informal vendors.
