The incident unfolded during the trial of 33 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who are charged with malicious damage to property.
The courtroom, which was at full capacity, fell into a stunned silence as Chief Magistrate Damalie Agumaasiimwe rose from her bench and exited the room.
The conflict began when Chief State Attorney Sharon Nambuya challenged the seven-member defense team, led by lawyer Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa, to produce their practicing certificates, alleging they were "bullying her and don't behave in a professional manner."
The defense lawyers, which included MPs Shamim Malende and Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, complied, presenting digital copies of their certificates to the court.
The defense team then retaliated, demanding that Nambuya provide her official government appointment letter as proof of her employment with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Nambuya, visibly angered by the request, stated that her appointment was published in the government gazette and that "everyone had seen it."
The defense lawyers insisted that it was a matter of evidence, just as she had questioned their credentials.
As the argument continued, Magistrate Agumaasiimwe intervened.
"I cannot preside over a market-like court," she declared before walking out. "It is rare to see noise coming from the bar, a profession that is expected to be honorable in society."
The magistrate later summoned both legal teams to her office to address the issue and "restore sanity at the bar."
The 33 NUP supporters, including MPs Muwada Nkunyingi and Derrick Nyenko, were arrested in March during Kawempe North by-election violence. They face charges of being a common nuisance and destroying property.
The case was adjourned to October 21, 2025. Criminal summons were also issued for four suspects who failed to appear in court.
