Britam Uganda, Airtel Money Partner to Expand Mobile Access to Insurance, Investment Services

Britam Uganda and Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, the operator of Airtel Money Uganda, have launched a strategic partnership aimed at expanding access to regulated insurance, investment and other inclusive financial services through mobile-first channels.

The collaboration creates a long-term platform that combines Britam's financial services expertise with Airtel Money's digital infrastructure, extensive customer base and nationwide payment ecosystem to make insurance and investment products easier to access, understand, pay for and use.

The partnership is driven by a shared goal of closing Uganda's protection and investment gap. While millions of Ugandans rely on mobile money to earn, transact and support their families, many remain financially vulnerable to risks such as accidents, illness, death and loss of income, with limited access to affordable savings and investment opportunities.

By delivering financial services through a platform already embedded in everyday life, the partners say they hope to strengthen financial resilience among individuals and businesses.

The initiative will be rolled out under the Insurance Ku Ssimu campaign, which seeks to eliminate barriers such as long travel distances, paperwork, limited operating hours and time away from work, while maintaining the regulatory standards and customer protections required in the financial services sector.

Britam contributes expertise in general insurance, life assurance and asset management, while Airtel Money provides a nationwide digital payments platform, a vast agent network and communication channels that reach customers in urban, peri-urban and rural areas.

Together, the two companies plan to develop and distribute financial solutions based on customer needs and subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.

Speaking at the launch, Allan Mafabi, Managing Director of Britam Uganda, said the partnership is intended to deliver long-term impact beyond a single insurance product.

"This is a strategic partnership built around impact, not simply a single product. We are bringing together insurance, life assurance and investment expertise with a channel that millions of Ugandans already use. Our ambition is to make financial protection and wealth-building more accessible, and to help households and businesses become better able to withstand shocks and plan for the future," Mafabi said.

Japhet Aritho, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, said the partnership builds on the success of mobile money in driving financial inclusion.

"Mobile money has already transformed how Ugandans participate in the economy. The next opportunity is to use that same reach and familiarity to help customers protect what they are building and access more pathways to long-term financial security. Through this partnership, we are moving beyond transactions and using our platform to support inclusion, resilience and meaningful customer outcomes," Aritho said.

The two organisations said customer education will be central to the rollout through media campaigns, community activations, digital awareness initiatives and live demonstrations designed to improve public understanding of insurance and investment services available on the platform.

Britam and Airtel Money also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with regulators and industry stakeholders as they introduce additional financial solutions based on customer demand and responsible product design.

According to the partners, future success will be measured not only by transaction volumes but also by customer awareness, sustained product usage, service quality and the number of previously underserved Ugandans accessing regulated financial services.

The partnership marks the beginning of a broader effort to bring insurance, investment and other regulated financial solutions closer to Ugandans through digital channels, regardless of where they live or how they earn.
