Intern doctors call off strike

Intern doctors have called off their strike and resume their work today (October 7) pending  the resolution of their issues by the Health Committee of parliament.

This followed a meeting between the intern doctors  and the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga last week.

Last week intern doctors walked to parliament calling for its intervention in matters concerning their welfare.

The petition got the attention of the speaker and the ministry of Health was tasked to explain to the house why the issues of interns were not being addressed.

The speaker referred the matter to the Health Committee of parliament.

We have been told that the committee will soon interface with interns and other stakeholders to pave the way forward on getting permanent solutions.

Speaking to journalists over the weekend in Kampala, Dr. Herbert Luswata, the chairperson welfare of the intern doctors said the strike will temporally be halted.

"We will announce the resumption of national wide strike again by the interns if the decisions of the parliamentary committee delays or its unfavourable to us,"he said.

He added:"The leadership has got the following resolutions: interns to start work in all the 35 hospitals temporally starting on 7th October 2019."

The interns want their allowances to be increased to 3million per month which will cater for transport, accommodation and meals while executing their duties.

Luswata noted that the interns doctors do 70% of the work in the hospitals and their numbers stand at 170 members.
