Bishop Bukomeko Condemns Excessive Force by Security Agencies
The Bishop of Mityana Diocese has raised concern over alleged excessive force by security agencies, calling for professionalism, constitutional adherence, and improved protection of human rights amid growing public debate on recent arrests.

The Bishop of Mityana Diocese, Rt Rev James Bukomeko Ssalongo, has criticised what he described as increasing incidents of excessive force by security agencies, urging law enforcement to uphold human rights and operate within constitutional limits.

Bishop Bukomeko made the remarks while officiating at the commissioning of a new maternity ward at Lulagala Health Centre III in Nakibanga Parish, Mityana Municipality.

His comments came in the wake of the recent arrest of Erias Lukwago, an incident that has sparked public debate over the conduct of security agencies during political operations.

He said the manner in which some security operations are carried out risks undermining public trust in state institutions and could weaken national cohesion.

“We expect security agencies to carry out their responsibilities professionally and within the law. Every Ugandan deserves to be treated with dignity regardless of their political beliefs,” Bishop Bukomeko said.

The bishop called on President Museveni to take a closer interest in public concerns regarding security conduct, arguing that accountability within law enforcement agencies is essential for maintaining public confidence and national harmony.

“I call upon the President to listen to the concerns of the people and ensure that security operations are conducted in a manner that respects human rights and promotes national harmony,” he added.

Beyond security matters, Bishop Bukomeko also raised concern over the welfare of medical interns, urging government to restore and prioritise their financial support. He noted that intern doctors play a critical role in Uganda’s healthcare system and require adequate facilitation to perform effectively.

“Medical interns are an important part of our healthcare system. Supporting them is not only an investment in their future but also an investment in the health of our nation,” he said.

The event also marked the commissioning of a new maternity ward at Lulagala Health Centre III, a facility that had previously been affected by damage caused by a strong storm.

Health workers said the new structure will significantly improve maternal healthcare services in the area and enhance safety for expectant mothers.

According to staff at the facility, the upgraded maternity ward will help reduce congestion and improve service delivery for mothers seeking care.

“The new maternity ward will help us serve mothers better and improve the quality of care offered at this facility. We encourage residents to continue utilizing the health centre whenever they need medical services,” a health worker said.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the development, describing it as an important step in improving healthcare access in Mityana Municipality and surrounding communities, particularly for maternal health services.
