Police has announced mass deployments along major high ways, following isolated cases of accidents that are beginning to happen due to the festive season syndrome.
Police says all resources will now be focused on traffic to avoid the repeat of the past.
Over the last few days, a spate of accidents occurred on the various major high ways, claiming lives in the process.
According to police this is due to the festive season syndrome, where people are rushing to destinations without considering other road users.
Going forward, the force has announced that all resources will for the next coming weeks be diverted to traffic and road safety to avoid a repeat of fatalities that have shocked the nation in the past.
“All our men are out there. All our resources will be directed towards traffic and road safety to ensure we have a Christmas and festive season that is free of these avoidable fatalities” said Charles Ssembabulide the spokesperson Traffic police
Apart from the usual hunt for the unqualified road users or divers without permits, the force will enhance mechanical status checks ofnvehicles, drunk driving operations and multiple speed control teams to curtail over speeding that often results into accidents.
However, according to some of the drivers NBS TV talked to, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has not done enough in the fight against road carnage, where most roads have remained in bad shape while others lack road signs.
“There are no road signs on the roads. We here they are stolen by Ugandans that are not patriotic but UNRA should make sure that they are there because when they are lacking accidents increase” said Moses Mawejje, a driver.
Down town is now a beehive of activity and at the new taxi park, vehicles headed upcountry can be seen loading heavy luggage, characteristic of festive season shopping.
To the taxi administration here, passengers should work with the park administration to avoid wrong doers who take advantage of passengers during this period
The public has often complained about taxi drivers and their conduct during this period, resulting into many accidents.
