UCAA's Olive Lumonya  Urges Africa to Uphold Safety Standards While Embracing Change in Aviation

The Deputy Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, has urged African regulators to uphold the highest aviation standards while embracing innovation and change to secure the industry’s future.

Speaking at the close of the Regulatory Excellence Training at Protea Hotel in Entebbe, Lumonya emphasized that Africa’s aviation growth will depend on balancing rigorous oversight with openness to new technologies and practices.

“The growth of aviation in Africa depends on our ability to uphold the highest standards while embracing change,” she said, calling on participants to return to their states not just as regulators, but as “leaders and champions of safety and security.”

The three-day training, co-organized by UCAA, Boeing, Cranfield University, and the East African Community Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (EAC-CASSOA), focused on strengthening regulatory frameworks, advancing safety management practices, crisis preparedness, and navigating emerging technologies.

Lumonya praised the strong participation of delegates, noting their engagement as proof of the sector’s commitment to regulatory excellence. She reaffirmed UCAA’s readiness to continue collaborating with Boeing, Cranfield, and regional partners on capacity building and strengthening oversight systems.

“As Africa works to build a globally competitive aviation sector, we must ensure our skies remain safe, secure, and sustainable,” Lumonya added.

The training brought together aviation regulators and stakeholders from across East Africa, combining expert-led sessions, case studies, and interactive exercises, while also showcasing Uganda’s hospitality.
