FACT-CHECK: Cambodia Dismisses Viral Claim Ordering Africans to Leave the Country by May 31 Dismis

The Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia has dismissed as false a viral notice claiming that all Africans with expired immigration waivers have been ordered to leave the country by May 31, 2026.

In a press clarification issued by Cambodia's General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior on May 29, 2026, authorities stated that reports published by several websites alleging that "Cambodia Orders Africans with Expired Immigration Waivers to Leave by May 31, 2026" are "completely untrue."

The clarification specifically references online articles that circulated the claim and emphasizes that the Cambodian government has not issued any blanket directive targeting African nationals.

According to information shared with the Government of Uganda, Cambodian authorities formally notified Ugandan officials that the purported "official notice" circulating online is fake and should be disregarded.

"The Government of Uganda has received formal notice from the Government of Cambodia that the notice of forced exit by May 31, 2026 is fake," the clarification states.

Cambodian immigration authorities have urged members of the public, including foreign nationals residing in the country, to rely only on official government communication channels for immigration-related information.

The General Department of Immigration said all official notices and updates are published through its official website, immigration.gov.kh, and advised the public to verify any immigration-related claims before sharing them.

The viral claim had caused concern among African communities living and working in Cambodia after social media posts suggested that the government had imposed an ultimatum requiring all Africans to leave the country within days.

However, the Cambodian government's latest clarification directly contradicts those reports, stating that no such order exists.

The notice underscores the growing challenge of misinformation spread through online platforms and highlights the importance of verifying claims through official government sources before treating them as authentic.

Verdict

False. Claims that the Government of Cambodia has ordered all Africans with expired immigration waivers to leave the country by May 31, 2026 are not true. Cambodian authorities have officially dismissed the reports and confirmed that the alleged notice is fake. Official immigration information can be obtained through Cambodia's immigration authorities.
