The Electoral Commission has nominated 13 candidates for the directly elected district councilor seat for Central Division, Masindi Municipality, following the resumption of elections postponed after a candidate’s death.

Former district chairmanship and mayoral race losers have thrown their weight behind the councilor contest, reshaping the upcoming race.

Notable nominees include Moses Kirya, the current district speaker who lost both the NRM primaries and general election for district chairmanship to Patrick Wobusobozi, and Isaac Bongomin, the current Central Division chairman and FDC candidate who lost the Masindi Municipality mayoral race to Rodgers Amanyire.

The election was earlier suspended after the death of candidate James Munaku, reducing the initial list of nine nominees to eight.

Fresh nominations ran from February 9 to February 11, resulting in five additional candidates: Richard Alinaitwe, Baker Kitenda Alberto, Innocent Bikorwomuhangi of the People’s Front for Freedom, alongside Kirya and Bongomin.

Other originally nominated candidates include Hakim Kabagambe, Farouk Goodman, Muzamir Bagire, Benjamin Tumusiime, Patrick Agaba, Ntaro Byabasaija Noah, Ronald Bantu, and Maxwell Kyamanywa.

Masindi Returning Officer Gastervus Kakaire announced that the election for Central Division district councilor will be held on February 17, 2026.
