All systems go at Busiika as Armed Forces MX returns

Ugandan riders are pumped up to put up stellar performance on Sunday during the Armed Forces Appreciation MX Championship at the Uganda Motorsport Arena, Busiika.

The Sunday event will be the second edition of the championship that was last held in 2019 but was not held for two years due to the Covid pandemic.

Speaking on Wednesday, Asaf Natan, the architect of Busiika race track said everything is set for the Sunday championship with the track widened to accommodate the big number of riders.

“The track at Busiika is in its best condition ever. We have added a lot of sand sections with imported sand, and we have tried to make it more level so that the spectators can see from all over the track. We have made the jumps to world standards and the corners have been built very nice. We have a very wide start gate. I think it is a very impressive track and very safe. We took safety as very key; in case a rider goes off the track, he will not fall into a pot-hole or knock a tree or something. We have tried to create more safe zones so that if a rider goes off the track, he can come back and all that taken into consideration,”Natan said.

Julius Bukenya, one of the organisers said at least 100 riders have confirmed participation, with 15 coming from abroad.

“The foreign riders are expected to attend and these will start arriving on Thursday. These will come from USA, South Africa, Cyprus, Netherlands and Israel,”Bukenya said.

According to Wazir Omar, the riders are ready to give their best as they entertain the fans.

“This is our home track and we ready to entertain you but also give foreigners a ride for their money. We have ridden on this track numerous times and we know the way around it. The fans should be ready for great entertainment,” Omar said.

According to Col Deo Akiiki, the deputy UPDF spokesperson, the championship is yet another way to bring together the armed forces and the population in celebration of their work.

“The championship is one of the functions that bring together, not in words but physically the UPDF with people. You will see UPDF soldiers including generals mixing freely with the population during the championship. In this championship some of our soldiers and children will also be participating,” Col Akiiki said.

“To us as UPDF, augmenting sports with appreciation is an important thing. We feel so much humbled that we can get appreciated by the population. The entire leadership of the UPDF will be here to witness this championship.”
