Cyberspace, an opportunity for criminals to explore their skills

Technology

As more and more people become citizens of the internet, the space has become very deadly as it has attracted very dangerous criminals who use the space to lure victims, with some even losing their lives. The internet is an extension of the international system with no actual police to take on the criminals.

Online citizens, most of the time have got to look after themselves as they navigate their streets as the internet snipers are always alert, ready to attack anyone who doesn't secure themselves.

"On the internet, there is no such thing as free lunch. All those emails you receive asking you to share your details, you should be weary of them," Michael Bamwesigye, Head of Information and Technology at UCC asserts.

The internet is getting more and more integrated in our daily lives, it is impossible for us to be offline, hence higher chances of cyber-attack. As a matter of fact, cybercrimes grew by 600% as more people came online during the pandemic.

For that matter, we can't run or hide away from cyber-criminals according to Chagara Emmanuel, CEO Milima Technologies Uganda, "We are at a time where technology is integrated into every aspect of our lives. Be it Boda Boda, be it ordering food. Even the money you send to those in the village, you are using digital services."

The cybercrime experts note that the onus is not on government alone to protect you online. On an individual basis, you have got to have security detail in place to guard against lawlessness online, "Don't feel shy to ask. With matters of cyber security, ask before you act.

The next person could see what you have failed to see. Always confirm the source of communication before you act online. The longer the password, the better. All of us should have two factor authentication. In the event you are a victim of cyber-attack, don't hide, speak up."

Danze Edwin, Next Media Head of Digital Strategy says cyber-attack is not as complex as people think, it can happen to anyone and all brands online including media houses, "Our role as Next Com is to amplify the message during this month to the end users. People think of cyber security as something sophisticated, but it can be a disgruntled lover sharing private pictures. For us as media, when the account is compromised, it can be very damaging."

The month of October is globally dedicated to raising awareness about cyber security and promoting collaboration between government agencies and the private sector to ensure safety online for all.

Next Com, a company of Next Media Group has partnered with Milima Cyber Security and Uganda Communications Commision to equip Ugandans with information on how they can protect themselves online. This initiative was launched this week on Monday.
