Two juveniles, Eyagu Joshua and Ibiara Gabriella, lost their lives in a devastating house fire in Owolo Otatai Ward in Soroti City on Thursday.

According to Emanuel Otim, a relative of the victims, the community attempted to rescue the minors after noticing smoke coming from the house, but unfortunately, they succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

"The community tried their best to rescue the children, but it was too late. We are devastated by this loss," said Otim.

Edison Obukulem, the acting spokesperson for East Kyoga Police, confirmed that the mother of the children, aged 10 and five, had left them locked inside the house while she tended to her garden, and their father was away at his workplace in Kaberamaido as a teacher.

"The neighbours noticed smoke billowing from the house and raised the alarm, prompting a response from the community. Unfortunately, their efforts were in vain," said Obukulem.

The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

"This is a tragic incident, and we are working to establish the cause of the fire in this solar connected house We urge the public to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents," said Obukulem.
