Dr. Lawrence Muganga blasts security over unprofessionalism after release

Featured

Dr. Lawrence Muganga, the Victoria University Vice Chancellor who was on Thursday arrested by the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) has blasted the security agency of unprofessionalism.

Following his arrest on Thursday, the UPDF said in a statement that the arrest by a joint security team was meant to interrogate him on allegations of espionage.

However, on Friday evening, he was released, and photos released on social media depicted Muganga celebrating the release with close friends.

Blasts security

CCTV footage released by Victoria University management on Friday indicated not less than eight plain clothed security operatives arrest Muganga from his office but also manhandled Constable Barbara Nagudi, the female Counter Terrorism police officer attached to him.

Members of the public, especially on social media have since condemned security for the manner the arrest was carried out but also manhandling their comrade in arms.

Speaking shortly after his release, Dr.Muganga joined the other Ugandans in blasting security on how the arrest was made.

“She is quite an amazing person trying to do her job. You are 10 people, see someone well dressed in her uniform and you choose to fight her! If there is, these people should be subjected to training,”Dr.Muganga said in attacks aimed at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence.

He however said he was happy with the way the counter terrorism police officer protected her during the scuffle of the arrest.

Release

The Victoria University Vice Chancellor’s released followed condemnation of the army on the manner the arrest was done.

Whereas the UPDF spokesperson, Brig Flavia Byekwaso in a statement said Muganga who holds a Canadian passport was arrested over espionage and illegal stay in the country, a number of commentators insisted that the proper procedure was summoning him before arrest but not humiliating him.

Speaking during a press briefing at Kampala Serena Hotel, Muganga’s family members and friends condemned the manner in which the arrest was carried out.

“If they can embarrass and humiliate a vice chancellor of a university in broad day light, what happens if they picked you after midnight? If he committed a crime, why don’t you summon him,” Frank Gashumba questioned.
