Uganda’s rugby team withdrawn from Olympics qualifiers over Covid

Coronavirus outbreak

The Uganda Rugby 7s national team has been withdrawn from the World Rugby Sevens Olympic Games Repechage tournament over Covid.

The World Rugby Sevens Olympic Games Repechage tournament is the final qualification event for the Olympic games and this was scheduled for June 18 to 20 at the Stade Louis II Stadium in Monaco, France.

However, following a number of positive results from the Ugandan team, it was decided that they are withdrawn.

“All Uganda players have been in strict isolation since arrival, and the delegation will continue to follow the isolation quarantine process as determined by the Monaco authorities’ public health guidelines,” a statement from World Rugby said on Thursday.

The Uganda Rugby Union confirmed that the national team had a couple of Covid-19 cases and that with other team contacts; it was inevitable to be withdrawn from the tournament.

“While this is devastating given all the effort put into preparation please spare a thought for the team especially those who are not well. We wish them a speedy and full recovery and a safe journey back home,” URU said.
