NRM EC threatens to call off elections in Mawogola if violence persists

The NRM electoral commission boss, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has threatened to call off primaries in Mawogola North and West slated for Wednesday this week if the violence persists.

Elections in both constituencies were early this month postponed to allow investigations into acts of violence against some of the candidates.

In Mawogola West, the postponement followed accusations by Anifa Kawooya Bangirana that her opponent, Joseph Ssekabiito, the incumbent MP had ordered his supporters to beat her up.

In Mawogola North, the contest is between Godfrey Aine Kaguta and Shartsi Kutesa Musherure both closely related to the First family but polls were postponed after incidents of violence in the area.

While addressing the media on Monday, Odoi, said the people of Mawogola have to exhibit calmness or have elections called off for the fourth time, in which case there will be no NRM flag bearers in the two constituencies.

"We shall have a meeting tomorrow (today) in Mawogola with all of them and we agree whether they want elections to take place or not, "Odoi said.

He warned voters and candidates that this might be the last chance for electing flag bearers.

"I call upon the people of Mawogola that this is the last chance for them to have primaries, if they disturb the primaries as a result of violence and demonstrations, we shall not hold elections there. We shall have a constituency without flag bearers, "he warned.
