The Democratic Party(DP) President, Norbert Mao, has revealed that some members who defected to other parties including the National Unity Platform have sent signals that they want to return to the party.
Recently, more than 10 party MPs under the DP bloc joined NUP which is led by Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Mao said that those who want to return will be allowed but won’t be favoured against the loyal members of the party. He did not reveal their names.
“If you have gone to another party, when you come back you start afresh. You are a totally new member, even if you had been a member for 30 years before you left,” he said.
Mao also cautioned leaders of the party branches against entering alliances with other political organisations to front other candidates and lock out DP candidates in any position.
He noted that any alliance that is entered into by DP should be sanctioned by the party leaders.
“I am not against local alliances but can you imagine a Saza chief in Buganda making an agreement with another Saza chief of Bunyoro without the knowledge of Buganda? Do you think Mengo would accept that?”he queried.
Mao stressed his concern about the suffering Ugandans who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and said that they should be helped to come out of the situation.
He asked the government not to institute another lockdown because Ugandans have suffered enough.
He noted the government should find other alternatives of enforcing the standard operating procedures as guided by the ministry of Health.
“The government should put more efforts on sensitising people on sanitising, wearing of masks and observing social distancing than a lockdown.” Mao emphasised.
During the same press briefing, the party released the roadmap that will see it elect flag bearers for different political slots in the 2021 elections.
New recruits were encouraged not to be intimidated by people that have deserted the party, saying DP will come out of the 2021 elections stronger.
The party will hold it’s national delegates conference on September 12, 2020 in Gulu.
