9 and still counting: Things that have so far been used in the Bobi 2021 campaign

The campaign to thrust People Power founder Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine has gathered pace.

Aside from the different diaspora tours and interminable awards of recognition along with different disciplines, Bobi Wine’s campaign continues to be entrenched within those that have the highest belief that he can unseat the incumbent, President Museveni.

Armed with anything they can chance on, and ably willing to make their case, this specific group has taken the campaign a notch higher, by smearing it on items and other stuff.

Now, whether it is a desperate means or a new form of campaign that will highlight the political space in 2021, is a debate for another day.

Nile Post looks at the things that supporters of Bobi Wine have adopted as we head into 2021 elections.

Banknotes

The very first and kick starter of the ‘write on things’ campaign. Pictures have been circulating on social media showing legal tender defaced with a message to voters: “Vote Bobi Wine 2021”.

While there are banknotes with a message from Museveni’s supporters, it is very fair to state that Bobi Wine has won this race as notes bearing his name have exceeded in quantity, may not be in value since Museveni supporters wrote on dollars as well.

Nonetheless, the central bank has written cautioning anyone defacing banknotes. They have called upon Ugandans to reject any notes with such messages. Will this stop the campaign? Highly doubt.

Eggs

Yes, eggs. Supporters of Bobi Wine have coated egg protein with an engraving on the shell: “Vote Bobi Wine”. Just how small can an egg be for huge writing! Well, they will not be deterred, and the eggs are on the market.

Body tattoos

We have experienced this previously, but the rate it is taking could be on yet another level. So far about 6 images of bodies in ink have been displayed on social media. Ladies and gentlemen at once are tattooing their bodies with Bobi Wine’s name, others with Museveni’s.

Are the tattoos real? No, some of them are photoshopped images, but Ugandans are the most gullible people you will ever come across and do not be shocked if many tattoo clinics open up to turn this into a campaign tool.

Cabbage

One of these days, do not be shocked when you reach the market and buy yourself a ‘Bobi Wine’ cabbage. If you hate that fact, there is a hope that no one has started on the greens yet.

Bananas/Matooke

In one of the circulating images, a dealer in the Matooke/ Banana business had time off and with pen ink, wrote on each banana he hadn’t sold.

Sweet bananas

The sweet bananas have not been left behind., maybe because of their color.

Fish

The good news about this is that the fish in the water are intact. That on stalls, well well.

Meat

When you go to the home butcher, you will need to be sure the meat you are taking home is free of ink. For now, a few pictures have been circulating with meat carrying a message from Bobi Wine’s supporters.

Is this a campaign that will grow as we head into 2021?  Watch the space.
